Laois is set to stage its 8th International Golf Challenge from 14th -17th of May.

The Laois International Golf Challenge has in the past attracted people from Italy, Belgium, Sweden, the UK and Northern Ireland. The challenge was created in a bid to showcase Ireland, and particularly Laois as an important tourism and golf destination to both domestic and international golfers.

This year the Golf Challenge was launched on the 16th of February in the Heritage Golf & Spa Resort, Killenard by Irish Professional Golfer Gary Murphy. Mr. Murphy said he was delighted to be asked to the launch this competition, one which has grown year on year adding that Laois has so much lot to offer with both the competition and the value that it offers to golfers, both at home and from abroad.
Mr. Peter Carey, Co. Manager and Chairperson of Laois Tourism said that the Golf Challenge is now an important part of the calendar of events on offer to visitors to the county. He acknowledged the work and support of the Laois International Golf Challenge Committee and its Chairman Mr. Tom Treacy, in promoting the county with such a high profile event.

Laois County Council Chairman Mr. John Bonham, wished the International Golf Challenge every success and all those who return each year to play in the competition.

On behalf of the clubs that provide the excellent courses each year, Mr. Aidan Egan, Captain of Killenard Golf Club, and Mr. Tommy Hannon, Captain of The Heath Golf Club collectively wished the competition every success and look forward to working with the Laois International Golf challenge Committee to ensure that this year can be yet another successful event, and showcase what Laois has to offer its visitors.

The event itself is a fourball, betterball competition played over seven excellent parkland golf courses in County Laois including; Portarlington, Abbeyleix, Mountrath, Rathdowney, The Heath and Portlaoise, and the competition final takes place on Thursday 17th May at the magnificent Seve Ballesteros designed Heritage Golf & Spa Resort, at Killenard Players can opt to play in individual daily competitions or they can choose to battle it out over the four days. Daily prizes will be awarded with an overall prize being presented to the winning team on the last day at a special gala presentation of prizes in the Heritage Golf & Spa Resort, at Killenard.
